Mather Cleared for Transfer to Sacramento County

by Air Force Real Property Agency
March 26, 2012

3/26/2012 - Sacramento, CA -- The final and biggest chunk of land, totaling 3,533 acres at the closed Mather Air Force Base, has been cleared for deed transfer. This includes Mather's airport with one of the longest runways in the country and Mather Regional Park, with hiking trails, vernal pools, a lake and picnic areas.

Soon after Mather closed in 1993, the Air Force Real Property Agency leased the property to Sacramento County enabling redevelopment ahead of deed transfer. Nearly twenty years later, Mather is home to a corporate campus, residential neighborhood, cargo airport and expansive parklands. Although most of Mather's 5,718 acres is still owned by the Air Force and leased to Sacramento County, this is about to change with the upcoming transfer.

Removing a final hurdle to land transfer, the Air Force and regulatory authorities last month deemed all properties on Mather "suitable for transfer." This comes on the heels of decades of environmental cleanup performed by the Air Force and certified by regulators.
