A slower course on fort planning

If Fort Monmouth is to be closed by the Defense Department by 2011, how its 1,100 acres will be used is vital to the economy of the region and state. Planning for the redevelopment shouldn't be rushed. The Pentagon should recognize that and grant local officials an extra nine months to devise the most advantageous plan for the property ordered shuttered as part of the Base Realignment and Closure process.

The Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Planning Authority, the agency charged with overseeing the redevelopment, Wednesday authorized its executive director to draft a request for an extension beyond the federally mandated Dec. 8 deadline for the local authority to create a blueprint for the future of the Army post. The authority is expected to approve the request for at least 270 days more at its September meeting.
