RANTOUL – The Air Force on Thursday turned over 500 acres of airport runways, 111 acres of aprons and taxiways and 170 acres of roads to the village of Rantoul.

"It's been a year coming," said Paul Carroll, an environmental coordinator for the Air Force who convened the quarterly Restoration Advisory Board meeting at the former Chanute Air Force Base Thursday. "It's a big day for the Air Force."

David Johnston, village administrator, said the village has big plans for the property, part of about 1,400 acres of land it leased from the Air Force after the base closed and the Air Force sold 706 acres to private buyers.

"The airport is an economic engine for the village, and we plan to expand as part of an intermodal facility, to be a cargo airport," Johnston said. "We don't feel this area needs to have another people airport."
