Life after Wal-Mart Loss of Newtown deal is no reason to give up Sarasota Herald-Tribune (FL) September 19, 2007A plan to put a new Wal-Mart on a polluted brownfield in Newtown died a quiet death this month. More than three years of work went down the drain. There was no real explanation. Apparently, the discount retailer and the city of Sarasota (which owns the site) could not agree on funding this private-public partnership. It is discouraging to see the property -- vacant for many years -- sit useless. For down-on-its luck Newtown, redevelopment on those 18 acres would spark jobs and economic activity. Wal-Mart could have provided both, but many of those jobs would not have paid well. ...
