‘Toxic Land’: Protest Targets SF Housing Plans at Contaminated Hunters Point Naval Shipyard Radioactive material found at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard is fueling fresh concerns about redevelopment and community health. By Ezra David Romero KQED (San Francisco, CA) June 24, 2026 Environmental activists and community members rallied on the steps of San Francisco City Hall on Wednesday, calling for city leaders to push for a full cleanup of radioactive contamination at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard. Holding signs like “No homes on toxic land,” more than 100 members of 28 local organizations demanded a comprehensive retesting of the site, full cleanup of all contamination, greater community oversight and health reparations for residents. The rally comes after the U.S. Navy disclosed this spring that radiological material was found in a cabinet at the former naval shipyard in April during the long-running cleanup operation. It’s the latest in a long line of discoveries of dangerous substances at the infamous superfund site, which could soon be developed into thousands of homes. … For the entire story, see https://www.kqed.org/news/12088662/toxic-land-protest-targets-sf-housing-plans-at-contaminated-hunters-point-naval-shipyard — Lenny Siegel Executive Director Center for Public Environmental Oversight A project of the Pacific Studies Center LSiegel@cpeo.org P.O.
