"Long-term stewardship" refers to the mechanisms necessary to ensure both short- and long-term protection of the public and the environment after initial facility cleanups have been completed. These mechanisms include physical and institutional controls, information management, environmental monitoring, and risk assessment. The emergence of "stewardship" reflects a shift in the federal view from the short-term cleanup perspective of the past decade to a focus on the long-term performance of remedies and the effects of residual contamination at cleanup sites decades from now.
