Marines warn of unexploded ordnance danger on Browns Island near Onslow Beach by Alaina Laster WCTI TV-12 News (New Bern, NC) May 21, 2025 As boating season reaches its peak, officials at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune are issuing a stern warning about the dangers lurking on Browns Island near Onslow Beach. The island, historically used as a military training area, is potentially littered with unexploded ordnance. To highlight the risks, the Marines conducted a controlled explosion, demonstrating the potential hazards and urging civilians to steer clear of the area. Sam Mortimer, a base range safety officer, emphasized the hidden dangers beneath the island's sandy surface. "It’s not safe to come up here on the beach. Sometimes people will like, park their boats like right there, and then they’ll like to walk up on the beach—you don’t know what’s in the water," he said. Mortimer explained that Browns Island was once a dedicated impact area during conflicts such as the Vietnam War, World War II, and World War I. "This used to be a dedicated impact area back in Nam, WWII, WWI," he said, noting that unexploded bombs are still discovered there. … For the entire story, see https://wcti12.com/news/local/marines-warn-of-unexploded-ordnance-danger-on-browns-island-near-onslow-beach — Lenny Siegel Executive Director Center for Public Environmental Oversight A project of the Pacific Studies Center LSiegel@cpeo.org P.O.
