Elevated chemical levels prompt more testing at Abby Kelley Foster Charter Public School

WORCESTER – The state’s environmental protection department has ordered further testing at a local charter school where elevated levels of toxic chemicals were detected late last month.

According to the agency, initial air testing conducted on June 9 found high levels of petroleum and other volatile organic compounds at Abby Kelley Foster Charter Public School’s high school at 6 New Bond St.

Brian Haas, the school’s executive director, said a specific compound detected was TCE, short for Trichloroethylene, a toxic chemical that the Environmental Protection Agency says can cause adverse health effects. But Mr. Haas said the “identified presence of TCE does not pose an immediate risk to those at the property,” adding staff working at the school this summer are not in the part of the building – an area near the loading dock and mechanical room at the high school – where the readings were taken.
