Knight seeks federal funds for groundwater cleanup

Congressman Steve Knight has asked the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for money needed to continue removing hazardous perchlorate from Santa Clarita Valley groundwater.

In a letter dated May 6 to Lt. General Thomas P. Bostick, commanding general of the Army Corps of Engineers, Knight stresses the importance of pressing ahead with groundwater cleanup, citing health concerns.

Scientists believe the perchlorate in Santa Clarita Valley groundwater originates from the Whittaker-Bermite site, nearly 1,000 acres of land south of Saugus Speedway used for munitions manufacturing and contaminated with toxins. Perchlorate is a salt that is known to disrupt the functioning of the thyroid gland in humans.
