Subject: [CPEO-MEF] ENCROACHMENT: Virginia budgets for buffer zones
Budget could include $2.4 million for encroachment

Concerned about protecting Virginia's military assets, lawmakers are moving toward including $2.4 million in the state budget to reduce urban encroachment around two Hampton Roads airfields.

If approved this week, the budget amendments would allocate money to buy land around the Navy's Fentress Auxiliary Landing Field in Chesapeake and Langley Air Force Base in Hampton. The efforts are modeled after Virginia Beach's program to reduce encroachment around Oceana Naval Air Station.

With the economies of Hampton Roads and Virginia heavily dependent on military spending, state and local officials worry another round of base closures could threaten the bases, particularly if encroachment is not addressed.

Reducing density around the airfields can provide a buffer in the event of a fighter jet crash, like the one that occurred in Virginia Beach in April 2012, and has been a priority for the Navy and Air Force.
