City of New Brighton resolves dispute with U.S. Army over water cleanup By Kassie Petermann Sun Focus (MN) February 5, 2015The city of New Brighton has reached an agreement with the U.S. Army and the U.S. Department of Justice - the federal government will continue to pay New Brighton’s costs for operating the city’s water treatment facility for the next 30 years.
The agreement, contained in a supplemental litigation settlement agreement filed in federal district court in Minnesota, assures that the city will receive the funding needed to provide the same level of safe and clean water that residents have received for the past two decades.
New Brighton’s water treatment facility pumps and treats more than 1 billion gallons of water per year, on average. It is equipped with state-of-the-art technology used to remove U.S. Army contaminants from the water. Between 1990 and 2013, the facility removed more than 11 tons of volatile organic compounds from the water supply. Excess water produced that is not used by New Brighton is delivered to Fridley.
