Subject: [CPEO-MEF] FUEL: Kirtland Air Force Base (NM) cleanup "in limbo"
Status of fuel pool cleanup still in limbo

In October 2009, the New Mexico Environment Department directed the U.S. Air Force to begin cleaning up a half-mile-long pool of spilled jet fuel floating atop Albuquerque’s groundwater 500 feet underground "as soon as possible."

After nearly five years of stops and starts and changing plans, the pool remains largely untouched.

Air Force officials and state regulators say the delay is a recognition of the problem's complexity. Critics say the delay is increasing the cost of cleanup and the risk to Albuquerque’s groundwater.

As they learned more about the nature and extent of the contamination, Air Force and state officials say, it became clear hasty efforts could inadvertently hurt rather than help by spreading contamination instead of cleaning it up.
