Subject: [CPEO-MEF] FORMER SITES, VOCs: Armstrong World Industries and former Naval Ordnance Plant, Macon, Georgia
First Armstrong Superfund cleanup plans finalized
"This is a ridiculously slow project," says Macon official

Armstrong World Industries will take the first step next year in containing old cancer-causing pollutants that have fouled Rocky Creek for years.
According to its website, the EPA does not yet know whether there are human exposures to contaminants at the neighboring Superfund site at Allied Industrial Park, or whether the pollution there is still moving. There is a significant plume of TCE in the groundwater.
The Georgia Environmental Protection Division and the EPA have long unofficially identified the Navy as responsible for at least part of the contamination. The Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for cleaning up pollution from formerly used defense sites, but the corps has refused to clean up the south Macon site because it says the Navy wasn’t the only perpetrator.
Several years ago, the EPA had said it would be using a new technology to check for TCE fumes in one or more of the buildings. TCE can migrate into indoor air from the soil beneath through cracks in a building’s foundation.
But the vapor study hasn't happened.
