Sunnyvale: Redevelopment of former Onizuka airbase moves ahead By Alia Wilson San Jose Mercury News (CA) January 11, 2013Plans for a cold-weather shelter transition program are starting to fall into place now that the Department of Housing and Urban Development has given its blessing to redevelop the former Onizuka Air Force Station.
Sunnyvale received a letter from HUD in December formally granting approval of the Onizuka Redevelopment Plan and Homeless Assistance Submission and Legally Binding Agreement, marking a long-awaited payoff after nearly seven years of effort by various city officials, federal and local partner agencies and the community at large.
The Department of Defense slated the airbase for closure through the Base Realignment and Closure Act in September 2011.
