Army to host meeting on empty Fort Wainwright housing development Fairbanks News-Miner (AK) January 13, 2013FAIRBANKS - The U.S. Army is holding a public meeting Tuesday to talk about the future of Taku Gardens, a $55 million housing development on Fort Wainwright that has been siting empty for seven years after toxic waste was found buried on the building site.
The Army has spent more than $21 million cleaning up the Superfund site after toxic PCBs were discovered in 2005 when contractors breaking ground to do foundation work reported a chemical odor in the soil.
...The Army is hoping to move soldiers into the empty housing project this coming summer and the goal of Tuesday’s meeting is to gather public comment that can be incorporated into the final record of decision, said Joe Malen, environmental restoration program manager for the U.S. Army Garrison at Fort Wainwright. The comment deadline is Feb. 12.
