Environmental groups including NYLCV are raising concerns about the federal government's plan to sell Plum Island, located off the Suffolk County shore of Long Island.
The island is home to the nation's only lab dedicated to studying infectious animal diseases. The General Services Administration (GSA) is handling the sale of the 840-acre island, with the current lab's research operations set to move to a new $1.14-billion facility to be built in Kansas.
Environmental groups like the Nature Conservancy, the Audubon Society, and Save the Sound worry that selling Plum Island and its development rights would be bad for the area's abundant wildlife, which includes several threatened and endangered species of migratory birds.
