Baraboo property will be divided up, public can tour By Meg Jones Milwaukee Journal Sentinel October 18, 2012Baraboo - For seven decades this property either thrived with thousands of workers manufacturing ammunition for three wars or lay dormant once the Army no longer needed it. Now this land is about to change again - in some places, it could soon return to the prairie and oak savanna that once was the face of Wisconsin, and hikers and bicyclists could traverse a landscape where nitroglycerin was mixed.
The Badger Army Ammunition Plant, which produced more than 1 billion pounds of rocket propellant, ball powder and smokeless powder used in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, has practically disappeared. All but a handful of the 1,400 buildings that once dotted the 7,000-plus acres now exist only as piles of concrete crushed into gravel, three- story-high towers of chipped wood destined for a landfill and massive tangled bundles of rebar waiting to be sold as scrap.
