Fort Ord destruction of old shells rattles Peninsula Destruction of old shells rattles Peninsula By LARRY PARSONS Monterey Herald (CA) May 31, 2012The boom was louder than most of the detonations of old shells found during the cleanup of former munition areas on Fort Ord.
An explosion about 11:30 a.m. Thursday was heard in Monterey, Seaside and other parts of the Peninsula was part of scheduled detonation of unexploded ordnance.
Two simultaneous detonations were set off within the 6,500-acre Bureau of Land Management impact area near Hawkeye and Riso Ridge roads, Army officials said.
The 2,100-foot exclusion zone for the detonation was inside the fenced impact area on the federal land. Roads within the "munitions response site" were closed to all nonessential personnel during the detonations.
