U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeks proposals for cleanup of former
chemical storage building
BY BEN WRIGHT Columbus Ledger-Enquirer (GA) March 14, 2012More than 20 years after Fort Benning stopped using a building for mixing and storing dangerous pesticides, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is seeking proposals to clean up the site.
Built around 1945 and used until 1990 by the Entomology Division of the Directorate of Public Works, the building’s operations were shifted to another nearby facility and tests were conducted until the late 1990s to determine how to treat the area.
Studies show the area contained levels of chlordane and DDT or dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane. Both products were used by farmers and homeowners to control unwanted insects or pests. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency banned the use of DDT in 1972 and all uses of chlordane in 1988. DDT is still used in some poorer countries that need an inexpensive and effective pesticide to kill insects that carry dangerous diseases.
