Toxic Waste Cleanup Continues at Cutler Navy Base

CUTLER - In its heyday it was the largest and most powerful facility of its kind in the world, capable of communicating with U.S. submarines navigating the Atlantic and Arctic oceans.

But 51 years later the Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station on Sprague Neck Peninsula is attracting less favorable attention as the Navy carries out a toxic waste remediation plan.

A union official representing 86 civilians who work at the base has filed a claim seeking information about whether 12 of the employees were exposed to hazardous wastes.
