EPA wants to add Bibb industrial park site to Superfund list BY S. HEATHER DUNCAN Macon Telegraph (GA) March 7, 2012The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency expects to recommend adding Allied Industrial Park in Bibb County to the federal National Priorities List, commonly known as the “Superfund” list of the country’s most contaminated properties.
...The Department of Defense manufactured ordnance on 433 acres between Guy Paine Road and Rocky Creek from 1941 to 1965. A private company continued to manufacture ordnance there until Allied Chemical Co. purchased the land and manufactured seat belts at the facility during the 1970s. The land was subsequently turned into an industrial park by the Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority.
...Wendel said the Allied site has long been known to qualify for the Superfund program. It wasn’t added before because the state of Georgia was trying to work out cleanup with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which is responsible for removing contamination from Formerly Used Defense Sites.
