In its heyday, the United States Naval Training Center at Bainbridge was a 1,200-acre, full-fledged military base where nearly 40,000 recruits at a time went through boot camp and other training to prepare for war.

But in the past 36 years since Bainbridge closed, the site has stagnated. It is at once wild and abandoned – a military ghost town.

"The base is now covered in scrub trees, weeds and brush and is littered with cast-off concrete boulders, crumbling sign monuments with ghostly lettering, and a few dozen derelict buildings determined to fight the elements and neglect, to survive one more decade," Erika Quesenbery writes in her 2007 book "United States Naval Training Center, Bainbridge," a history of the property.
