Municipalities want $2 million to create Langley buffer State funds would help buy land surrounding base By Robert Brauchle Daily Press (VA) March 2, 2012HAMPTON - A contingent of Peninsula state senators has submitted legislation to the General Assembly requesting $2 million be added to the 2012 budget to help area municipalities buy land encroaching on Langley Air Force Base's safety zone.
Area officials believe the buffer will help stave off anticipated Defense Base Realignment and Closure Commission closures by proving the base is safe for military objectives.
"The urgency of solving the Langley Air Force base encroachment issue is a no-brainer when one considers the massive $1.2 billion economic impact that Langley AFB has on the Hampton Roads region," Senate Majority Leader Thomas K. "Tommy" Norment, R-James City County, said in a news release.
