Supervisors say no to free building Board: Army Reserve facility would cost too much to maintain. By CHRISTINIA CRIPPES Hawk Eye (IA) February 22, 2012The U.S. Army Reserve building in Middletown nearly has it all: well- maintained space, a decent location near a four-lane highway and its price is right.
But there's just one problem for Des Moines County supervisors and staff that kept them from agreeing to take on the building once the Army Reserve has disposed of it. Though the building would be free, they don't have the budget to maintain, refurbish and keep the lights on.
"It's a great opportunity, but there's one thing about opportunities: It has to be an opportunity you can afford," Des Moines County Board of Supervisors Chairman Tom Broeker said during a work session Tuesday morning. "If an opportunity comes along where you're not in a position to afford it at that time, it's hard. But at least in my world view, you say no."
