Oakland Army Base to be used for port operations Carolyn Jones San Francisco Chronicle January 25, 2012Ferris wheels, a casino, auto malls - just about the only idea not proposed for the old Oakland Army Base was a three-ring circus.
But in the end, Oakland chose a decidedly unglamorous fate for the 330-acre site just south of the Bay Bridge: port operations.
Thirteen years after the Army left, Oakland and its port are moving ahead with plans to turn the property into a freight transfer area for ships, trains and trucks. The plan will bring thousands of jobs and millions in tax revenue to a city and region that sorely need it, officials said.
