Army foes challenge use of BLM lands at Pinon Canyon Interior secretary will make decision in fall. By PETER ROPER | Pueblo Chieftain (CO) August 3, 2011Out among the 238,000 acres that make up the Army's Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site are 5,650 surface acres under the stewardship of the federal Bureau of Land Management.
That's a relatively small piece of the Pinon Canyon range, but the Army also needs BLM permission to train atop of some 141,554 subsurface acres of mineral rights located at both Pinon Canyon and Fort Carson.
On Tuesday night, BLM officials came to Pueblo to hear from local residents about the Army's request to keep using those lands - a 15- year extension that is expected to be approved as a matter of course, given the Army's insistence on ramping up training at the range northeast of Trinidad. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar has the job of making a final decision this autumn.
