SouthShore and the Navy base at Point Mugu Opinion by Tim Flynn Ventury County Star (CA) June 25, 2011The year is 2022. The 20th graduation ceremony is under way at CSU Channel Islands. Eager graduates accept their diplomas and step out into the real world.
Far from the noise and jubilation, a retired aeronautics engineer walks his golden retriever five miles west at Ormond Beach. Newly settled at Oxnard's SouthShore development, the sandy beaches are welcomed relief to the hustle and bustle world of Pasadena and Burbank.
In the distance, the ocean breeze carries the faint sound of a tolling bell as the final change-of-command ceremony is performed at Naval Base Ventura County, Point Mugu. The new base commander, a 35- year-old captain and graduate of Annapolis, will assume his duties under awkward circumstances. In less than 24 months, the base will close and be handed over to a new civilian authority.
