City seeks public ownership of land around Langley AFB By David Macaulay Newport News Daily Press (VA) December 29, 2010HAMPTON - More than 40 percent of military aircraft accidents occur in the safety zones around airfields - also known as clear zones - but the one around Langley Air Force Base is by no means clear.
Over the next few years, Hampton will seek to convert 19 parcels of privately owned land into public ownership to protect both the base and people living and working in the clear zone. Some uses of concern to the city and the military include a trailer park, a concrete business and a storage business.
The effort will be part of the Joint Land Use Study (JLUS), which was drawn up by Hampton, neighboring cities and Langley AFB.
Bruce Sturk, Hampton's director of federal facilities support, said land acquisitions already are being considered.
