Subject: [CPEO-MEF] FUEL: Robins Air Force Base (GA) pipeline
Further water tests find no contaminated wells in south Bibb

Macon Telegraph (GA)
December 30, 2010

Recent tests of drinking water wells near two south Bibb jet fuel spills has revealed no contamination, according to the company that owns the pipeline that once leaked the fuel. Nevertheless, the company is continuing to test wells and paying to switch some residents to city water as it works to clean up the old spills.

An 11-mile pipeline supplying Robins Air Force Base with jet fuel from a bulk fuel storage terminal in south Macon leaked several times in past decades. Those leaks contaminated ground water with benzene and similar compounds in the Feagin Road and Barnes Ferry Road areas.

Although public water is available throughout those communities, not all residents use it. Bibb County Commissioner Lonzy Edwards said he determined, with the help of the Macon Water Authority, that 88 residents in the area might still be using wells.
