Bill and Ed Krantz know the history of the Kemp Lane and Shookstown Road 
area better than almost anyone. They've farmed the land, they've raised 
cattle on most of the fields, and for decades they've watched 
generations of neighbors grow up and move out.

So when the Kristen Renee Foundation hosted a tour of the land 
surrounding Fort Detrick's Area B in that part of Frederick, the Krantz 
brothers jumped at the opportunity to point out locations where they had 
seen questionable Army activity and where neighbors who died of cancer 
had lived.

Driving in a 15-seat van down Shookstown Road, Bill Krantz pointed to 
almost every house on both sides of the road: "That family died of 
cancer," he said, over and over again. "All these people have died of 
cancer, all of them," he said at Shookstown and Old Receiver roads.

The tour stopped along Shookstown, just past Waverley Drive, where the 
Krantz brothers grew up. The foundation of their old home sits on one 
side of the road, and their aunt's old house sits across the street. 
There, Bill, 76, and Ed, 70, spoke about the Army spraying chemicals 
from towers and balloons at Area B, as well as Army helicopters dropping 
what it said was harmless shreds of paper onto fields. The two men said 
they had conflicting views of Fort Detrick as a neighbor.
