|Subject:||[CPEO-MEF] PRESERVATION: Moffett Field's (CA) Hangar One cork room to be dismantled|
Walls of Hangar One's cork room are contaminated, must be removed, Navy says By Diana Samuels Palo Alto Daily News/San Jose Mercury News (CA) August 4, 2010 Hangar One's historic "cork room" will likely lose its cork. The cork is simply too contaminated and must be removed from the Moffett Field hangar in Mountain View, the U.S. Navy has concluded.
The long, narrow cork room on the hangar's third floor originally stored the gas cells that kept airships aloft. It was slated for demolition along with most interior structures in the PCB-laden hangar, but at the urging of preservationists the Navy agreed last month to analyze samples from the walls to determine whether they were contaminated.
Now, the Navy says the cork room's 6-inch-thick cork walls -- used as insulation to keep the room temperature-controlled for the fragile cells -- are just too contaminated.
