By next year three wind turbines could be added to the one already spinning at the Massachusetts Military Reservation under a joint plan proposed by the Air Force and Army cleanup teams.

The turbines, to be located near the PAVE PAWS radar station on the Sagamore side of the base, are among more than two dozen turbines proposed on the Upper Cape since the first of the year, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA determines whether a wind turbine poses any risk to flights. The Air Force and Army applied to place four turbines, but will only build three at most, said Doug Karson, a spokesman for the Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment.

Meanwhile, the 6th Space Warning Squadron at Cape Cod Air Force Station, which operates PAVE PAWS, is in the early stages of considering two wind turbines to reduce its $5,000 per-day electric costs, said Lt. Col. Max Lantz.
