Canaveral seashore spot listed in cleanup effort

A chunk of concrete sitting on an isolated, windswept spot at Canaveral National Seashore once attracted a constant stream of aircraft strafing the sand.

In 1943, the U.S. Navy filled an old airplane fuselage with concrete and placed it on the spot to serve as a target for pilots practicing for war on distant battlefields. Soon, planes arrived regularly from naval air stations at Daytona Beach and Sanford.

Earl Wallace, a longtime New Smyrna Beach resident, said he seems to remember aircraft from naval bases along Florida's east coast using the targets along Mosquito Lagoon. At the time, Wallace was stationed in West Palm Beach with the Coast Guard.
