Soil cleanup proposed at 7 Chanute sites By Tom Kacich Urbana/Champaign News-Gazette (IL) November 20, 2009RANTOUL - The Air Force has proposed removing 6 inches or more of soil from seven separate sites on the old Chanute Air Force Base property as a way of cleaning up the property and making it available for redevelopment.
The proposal is part of a plan to remove environmental hazards on the 2,174-acre former military base by 2016. It was made public Thursday at a quarterly meeting of the base's restoration advisory board.
In most cases, scraping off the soil and carting it to an off-site landfill would make the properties available for any kind of use, according to officials with Shaw Environmental Inc. of Greenville, S.C. Shaw has a $38.7 million performance-based contract to remedy environmental problems at 81 separate sites on the base, which was closed in 1993. So far, according to the Air Force, problems at 34 of the 81 sites have been remedied.
The Air Force has given Rantoul area residents 30 days to comment on the cleanup plan for the seven sites. A copy of the plan is available at the Rantoul Public Library, 106 W. Flessner Ave., Rantoul, and online at https://afrpaar.lackland.af.mil/ar/docsearch.aspx.
