Funds will create buffer near base By Carol Comegno Cherry Hill Courier-Post (NJ) August 17, 2009MOUNT HOLLY - The military has given Burlington County government an additional half million dollars toward farmland preservation in order to create a wider buffer zone around a joint military base.
AdvertisementMeanwhile, Ocean County is poised to partner with the Department of Defense to preserve more than 200 acres of open space in the area of Joint Base McGuire-Fort Dix-Lakehurst.
The two counties are cooperating in a joint land-use study with municipalities that border the bases and with the federal government. The early findings of that study identified land preservation as key to the two-mile Military Installation Buffer Zone for the bases to prevent local encroachment on military operations.
Burlington County has long been preserving open space and farmland around the Army post of Fort Dix and McGuire Air Force Base. More than 7,000 acres on 68 farms have been saved.
