Wal-Mart Could Lead to Travis AFB Closure, Claims Community Group

A proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter here near a deadly part of Highway 12 known as "Blood Alley" may also have a major impact - and could lead to the eventual closure of - Travis Air Force Base, according to information obtained by a community group opposed to the Wal-Mart project.

The letters are highly critical of the Wal-Mart location and suggest it may threaten the county's biggest employer, Travis AFB, which employs over 14,000 residents and contributes more than $1 billion to the local economy.

In one letter, sent to the Solano County staff from an official with the county Airport Land Use Commission, it states that the Wal-Mart store violates the Travis Airport Land Use Plan because the store would allow too many people per acre to the base.
