CLWA set to clean toxic wells
Project would filter perchlorate, other pollutants from Bermite site

SANTA CLARITA - After years of study, the Castaic Lake Water Agency is getting ready to start pumping and treating contaminated water from two wells that draw deep from within an aquifer near the Whittaker-Bermite site.

The operation is meant to protect groundwater sources from perchlorate, a potentially dangerous rocket fuel component that exists in high levels on the former munitions manufacturing site.

About half of the Santa Clarita Valley's water comes from groundwater, and a quarter of that water is around the site.

The water agency plans to use Saugus wells 1 and 2 - at Magic Mountain Parkway near a fork of the Santa Clara River and at San Fernando Road and Magic Mountain - to pump contaminated water from the Saugus Aquifer 800 feet down. Agency officials expect the operation to keep the plume of perchlorate from spreading.
