SANTA CLARITA - The two companies buying the nearly 1,000-acre contaminated Whittaker-Bermite site in the heart of town - which was beset by an earlier failed housing development and years of litigation - expressed optimism Friday for the future.
Cherokee Investment Partners and SunCal Companies are partnering to buy the former Saugus defense contractor for $63.8 million, following approval of the sale Thursday by an Arizona bankruptcy court.
"Cherokee and SunCal are the best in their fields - SunCal is the No. 1 land developer in California and Cherokee is the No. 1 brownfield expert in the country," said Tom Darden, Cherokee's chief executive officer.
SunCal spokesman Ray Pearl said the developer is looking forward to working with the city and the community to develop the property. The company has a stand in the area, having developed Tesoro del Valle in north Valencia and Northlake in Castaic.
