Additional pollution, explosives at arsenal

A report on the extent of contamination at 14 additional areas at the
Ravenna Army Ammunition Facility is to be made final in early 2006.

MKM Engineers, a consultant for the Army, found explosives and
heavy-metal contamination at the 14 medium-priority sites on the
now-closed 21,419-acre complex east of Ravenna in Portage and Trumbull counties.

That includes a pistol range, an airplane crash-test area, a quarry, an
explosives storage area and five load lines where artillery and mortar
shells were produced in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam
War. Also, two ammunition-testing areas, an old landfill, a scrap yard
and an area with explosively charged ground-anchoring devices were
analyzed by the Texas company under a nearly $1.4 million contract with
the Army.
