Subject: [CPEO-MEF] Suffolk (VA) ordnance dump
Helping disarm a depot

Painstaking work by Army engineers has cleared nearly 2,600 explosives
from a former ordnance dump in Suffolk.

SUFFOLK -- The Army Corps of Engineers expects to finish sifting for
discarded and burned shells at a former munitions dump in northern
Suffolk by September 2008, but cleanup of chemical contamination could
continue to 2011, depending on what's found in ongoing groundwater and
soil tests.

The cleanup matters because the 975-acre site - which includes a campus
of Tidewater Community College and some businesses - could become a
large warehousing and distribution hub, as well as a place for other
development between the Nansemond and James rivers. The Corps of
Engineers, which heads the cleanup effort, gave a tour Friday of the
former depot for members of a public board monitoring the work.

The military stored, recycled and dumped ammunition and artillery there
from 1918 to 1960. Ordnance was often destroyed by burning it in trenches.
