West Point ? A Defense Department investigation has identified areas
near the U.S. Military Academy where unexploded ordnance could pose a
risk to public safety.

TechLaw Inc., a Virginia-based environmental firm, conducted the review
by examining Academy records to estimate the location of potential
impact zones from closed test ranges.

The areas identified include private property along the east side of the
Hudson River north of Garrison, a patch of land between Cold Spring and
the Breakneck Ridge Highway Tunnel, and land north of West Point inside
the Palisades Interstate Park.

Military-owned lands near the Lee Housing area and Storm King State Park
were also determined to be potential problem areas.

In a statement, West Point Garrison Commander Col. Brian Crawford said
additional studies are planned to further assess the risk. He urged
people to exercise caution if they uncover unexploded devices.
