Subject: [CPEO-MEF] Cornhusker Plant (NE) and flood control
So it won't happen again
By Tracy Overstreet

Grand Island Independent (NE)
August 28, 2005

Anyone in northwest Grand Island impacted by the May 11 floods, anyone
involved in new development and anyone concerned about pollution in
storm water is being asked to attend a meeting Monday night at the
Central Platte Natural Resources District office.

A central piece of the meeting will be a description of a $16 million
flood control project planned to provide 100-year flood protection for
northwest Grand Island. The northwest area lies in the floodplains of
the Upper Prairie Creek, Silver Creek and Moores Creek.

Phase one is the development of 450 acres of water detention cells on
the former Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant. The NRD is expected to have
most of the land purchased from the Army Corps of Engineers later this
year. A small portion of the land can't be sold yet because it's not
clear of contamination from when the plant was used for bomb making.
