Jericho Island cleanup scheduled for fall

The Beaufort Gazette (SC)
August 23, 2005

A 25-acre island northwest of Parris Island will be cleared of
contaminated soil during the Navy's $1.7 million cleanup of a dumping
ground this fall.

An assessment by the Navy, the Environmental Protection Agency and the
S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control found levels of
arsenic, lead and other hazards on Jericho Island. The hazards could
pose long-term risks for humans and animals, said Tim Harrington, a
scientist at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island.

"There is no danger to just walking the site," he said of the island,
which has a causeway built onto its north end. "The island itself is 25
acres, and the areas of contamination are much smaller than that."
