Duluth takes on Cirrus project

MANUFACTURING: Duluth City Councilors will consider providing bridge
financing to help prepare site for Cirrus expansion.

August 12, 2005

Tom Cotruvo, Duluth's business development director, hopes to see
dirt-moving equipment begin to rumble next door to Cirrus Design Corp.
in a few days.

As the city awaits word on state and federal funding to help the
airplane manufacturer grow, the Duluth City Council will be asked Monday
to take a lead role in advancing the project.

Cirrus has ambitious plans to boost production from three to four
airplanes per day, but it will need more space to reach its goals.

The company wants to complete work on a 115,000-square-foot expansion of
its plant by May. To meet that timeline, Cotruvo said the city must
complete groundwork for the structure by Oct. 1.

Cirrus plans to build on property that formerly was home to a U.S. Air
Force base, but contamination and substandard soils discovered on the
city-owned site have slowed the project.
