Navy: No proof that fuel leak contaminated well

A jet fuel leak detected last month may not have anything to do with
water contamination discovered at the same time in a nearby well, Navy
officials said yesterday.

It's possible that someone dumped some petroleum in the dump around the
same time as the leak occurred, and that's how the well became
contaminated, said Petty Officer 2nd Class Ben Keller of the Navy public
affairs office.

It's also possible that the source was historical pollution from a Guam
Power Authority fuel line, not from one of the two Navy lines in the
area, he said.

Last month a 70-year-old Toto resident noticed a fuel smell in a bucket
of water he pulled up from a well near his property. Shortly thereafter,
it was discovered that a nearby pipeline running jet fuel from Big Navy
in Santa Rita to Andersen Air Force Base was leaking out of a valve.
