EPA: Unexploded fireworks contaminated water in Hills

June 16, 2005

Hills, Ia. - An official from the Environmental Protection Agency told a
gathering of Hills residents Wednesday evening that unexploded fireworks
caused a contamination of local groundwater and that the EPA will pay
for the installation of water filters in affected homes.

"By process of elimination, (fireworks) are really the only source that
it could be," said Craig Smith, a senior engineer with the EPA. "We
haven't got a smoking gun, but it's clearly the logical source."

Smith told a 90-minute forum of about 50 people at the Hills Community
Center that mishandling of fireworks caused a high level of perchlorate
in the groundwater in Hills, eight miles south of Iowa City.

HILLS -- A federal environmental agent told Hills residents Wednesday
the agency will stop supplying bottled water to 25 households with
perchlorate contamination and instead install temporary treatment systems.

The change is a temporary solution to help the town establish a
permanent city water system, said Craig Smith, project leader with the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 7.

In July, EPA officials will start installing reverse osmosis treatment
systems in homes that have contamination levels of 18 parts per billion
or more.
