NORCO: The state will check a site on Rachel Road for groundwater contamination.
By NICOLE BUZZARD and PAIGE AUSTIN Riverside Press-Enterprise (CA) February 16, 2005
NORCO - State officials will test for groundwater contamination today in a neighborhood several blocks from Wyle Labs, a former testing facility with an underground plume of toxic waste.
The move signals a minor shift in the state's testing pattern because today's testing site is not in an area previously flagged by scientists as a pathway for the groundwater plume.
However, today's testing site on Raquel Road is in an area where several residents have battled cancer and have expressed concerns that their health problems may be linked to contamination from Wyle Labs.
"We're ecstatic," said Jeanne Guertin, chairwoman of the city's Community Advisory Group, which works with the California Department of Toxic Substances Control. "It means (state officials) are listening to community concerns and they're taking a broader, more aggressive approach to testing."
