Subject: [CPEO-MEF] Presidio (of SF) Plan
Plan Adopted for S.F. Presidio 30-year Design for National Park
Kathleen Sullivan, San Francisco Chronicle
Thursday, August 29, 2002

The federal agency that oversees the Presidio of San Francisco has
adopted a 30-year master plan for the national park, ending an often
contentious public review process that began two years ago.

Standing in front of a row of historic, red brick barracks on the former
military post, Craig Middleton, acting executive director of the
Presidio Trust, announced Wednesday that its 7-member board of directors
had unanimously adopted the plan presented to the public last May.

"The plan will preserve the Presidio for public use forever," Middleton

The 174-page plan describes how the federal agency will preserve
historic buildings, restore open space and protect the park's natural
beauty -- and generate enough income to be financially self-sufficient
by 2013, the year federal subsidies will end.

It will replace a management plan created by the National Park Service
in 1994, two years before Congress turned over control over most of the
park's land and buildings to the Presidio Trust.
