Koreans Angry at U.S. Air Force
Their Message: Find Another Country for Bombing Practice

By Don Kirk International Herald Tribune

MAEHYANGRI, South Korea - The U.S. Air Force A-10 Warthog jet roared out
of the haze, streaked over wooded hills, rice paddies, factories and
houses, dove toward its target - and pulled up and away over the Yellow
Sea without firing. The small cluster of protesters yelled, waved fists and

''We stopped them,'' one of their leaders shouted over a loudspeaker
from the top of a small building on the prow of a slope overlooking the
Kuni range.

Below, racing toward the four distant targets with their huge black
bull's-eyes, the tiny figures of half a dozen protesters were visible,
one of them carrying a huge white flag.

A second A-10 dove low, then also pulled up as guards pursued these
protesters, who had managed to slip through a barbed-wire fence and
crawl unseen through fields of corn to reach the edge of the range.

''Demolish the target,'' the protesters outside the fence cheered in the
face of lines of several hundred helmeted policemen, carrying shields
and truncheons, blocking their way onto the range.
