When the federal government lured Edwin Bunker to the Bay Area from Virginia two years ago, they threw in a sweet incentive: a low-cost, two-bedroom apartment in Moffett Field's surplus military housing.

But now Bunker, his wife, Darla, and an estimated 120 other civilian families are about to be evicted from their military homes at Moffett Field, where they say low rents have made it possible to survive in the Bay Area's steep housing market.

"Now they're going to evict us. And we're not going to suffer as much as some families with lower salaries, who can't possibly afford the rents in the general market."

The U.S. Army is evicting the tenants of Orion Park, a community of about 250 homes that will be demolished to make room for a new Army Reserve training center.
